Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Siapiccia celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari, to whom the church of San Nicolò Vescovo is dedicated.
Siapiccia stands at the gateway to the Barigadu, among the hills of the Grighine, and its name is one half of a pair: it comes from the Sardinian sa ìa picìa, the small road, and faces Siamanna, sa ìa manna, the big road. Both roads are Roman, and they linked Fordongianus — ancient Forum Traiani — with Usellus; the lesser one passed here, and the village began as a garrison along it. Further back still the land holds nuraghi, and tombs and graffiti that suggest a Phoenician-Punic presence.
In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea, in the curatoria of Simaxis; when the giudicato fell in 1420 it passed to the marquisate of Oristano and in 1478, with the final defeat of the Arborean side, to the Aragonese, who made it a fief. Around 1767 it entered the marquisate of Arcais, held by the Flores Nurra, redeemed in 1839. In 1928 it was merged with Siamanna and Villaurbana into a single comune; in 1947 Siapiccia and Siamanna broke away from Villaurbana, but to become a comune in its own right Siapiccia had to wait for the referendum of 1975.
