Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Simala celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the municipal territory preserves the Nuraghe Spadua.
Simala — Simaba in Sardinian — lies in the Marmilla, and its oldest history runs along a road: the territory holds the remains of the Roman road from Neapolis to Uselis, and beside it the mansio, the posting station where travellers changed horses and slept. Around it stood the medieval village of Gemussi, which emptied out and of which only ruins remain; the nuraghe Spadua speaks for the stage before that.
In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea, in the curatoria of Parte Montis; when the giudicato fell in 1420 it passed to the marquisate of Oristano and in 1478, once the Arborean side was beaten, to the Aragonese, who placed it in the Incontrada of Parte Montis as a fief of the Carroz, counts of Quirra. In 1603 it entered the marquisate of Quirra, held by the Centelles and then by the Osorio de la Cueva, from whom it was redeemed in 1839 as the feudal system ended. The Sardinian spoken here is western Campidanese.
