Curcuris

Province: Oristano · Region: Sardinia · Population: 314 · Postal code: 09090

Curcuris is a village of the Marmilla that changed masters a good many times in a few centuries, and the list says more than it seems. It belonged to the judicate of Arborea and then to the marquisate of Oristano; after the defeat of the Arboreans it became a fief of the Carroz, counts of Quirra, and in 1511 passed by inheritance to the Centelles, who in 1603 took it into their marquisate. Then came the Borgia, the Català and finally the Osorio: Spanish families who knew these Sardinian villages chiefly by their revenues.

What weighs most, however, is recent. In 1927 a royal decree abolished the comune and made Curcuris a hamlet of Ales; the village regained its independence only in 1979, fifty-two years later. From the remotest past there remain two nuraghi, Perda 'e Mogoru and Soru, and the language of the house, which is western Campidanese Sardinian.
