On 8, 9 and 10 May Ardara, a municipality of 800 inhabitants in the province of Sassari, celebrates its patroness Our Lady of the Kingdom.
Ardara was the capital of the giudicato of Torres. The judges left Porto Torres for its unhealthy air and for the Barbary corsairs and came to live here, keeping the castle of Burgos for the summer: they built the palaczio regis, where they lived and the chancery worked, and the palatine chapel of Santa Maria del Regno, where the dynasty married, was enthroned and was buried. It was a woman, the donnikella Giorgia, who called the masons from Pisa.
In that palace Adelasia of Torres was born, and in that church, in 1238, she married Enzo of Swabia, natural son of Frederick II; her tomb was found in the crypt. At her death without heirs the giudicato ended and was divided up. Enzo, divorced and a prisoner in Bologna, went on signing himself king of Torres until 1272. Of the palace twelve metres of tower are left.
