Banari

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 610 · Postal code: 07040

The name perhaps comes from the Balari, one of the peoples the Romans found on the island. The village lies in the Meilogu, among nuraghi and domus de janas cut six thousand years ago, and the town hall is of red trachyte, the local stone. Here they grow an onion that carries the village's name.

Redeemed in 1839 from its last feudal lord, the count of Montesanto, Banari then had to fight for something less visible: in 1882 it asked for a polling station of its own and in 1885 it obtained the right to vote separately from Siligo. Today a noble palace holds a foundation with a museum of contemporary art, and the building of the old agricultural credit bank remains, documented from 1761.
