Bessude

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 428 · Postal code: 07040

Bessude sits in a valley of the Meilogu, facing Monte Pelau, and its name took four centuries to settle: the documents call it Bessute between the eleventh and the thirteenth centuries, Versute in 1341, then Versutta and Russette, Berssude in 1388, and only from 1430 Bessude. The village lives off the land and its flocks; small-format murals cover a few house fronts, and the cicciones festival defends a thick hand-rolled pasta.

The settlement has existed since the thirteenth century: it belonged to the Giudicato of Torres, in the curatoria of Caputabbas, then to the Doria and to the Aragonese, who turned it into a fief. In the sixteenth century plague decimated it and the village had to be repopulated; in 1636 it entered the marquisate of Montemaggiore and in 1839 it was redeemed from the Manca, the last feudal lords. The parish church of San Martino stands at the highest point, the little church of Santa Rughe at the entrance and San Leonardo, the oldest, lower down; outside the village lie the nuraghe of San Teodoro, the necropolis of Enas de Cannuja and domus de janas with rock paintings.
