Mores

In 1795 the people of Mores took part in the rising against the feudal lords and destroyed their palace. It was not the first time the town had chosen the awkward side: in 1478, in the war between Leonardo Alagon, marquis of Oristano, and the Aragonese viceroy, Mores stood with the marquis and gave shelter to one of his sons, Artaldo, together with the viscount of Sanluri, after the two had been forced to abandon the siege of the castle of Ardara. The marquis lost, and the town went back to the Aragonese. In 1614 it was incorporated into a marquisate bearing its own name and granted in fief to Antonio Manca, not for any merit of his own but as the husband of Caterina Virde. From the last of those lords Mores bought itself free in 1839, when the feudal system was abolished.

In the middle of the town stands the parish church of Santa Caterina, and beside it a bell tower which, at forty-seven metres, is the tallest on the island. It was designed by a local architect, Salvatore Calvia Unali, father of the Sassari poet Pompeo Calvia, and it is held to be one of the finest things in Sardinian neoclassicism: learned architecture in a town that lives by sheep-rearing and sends its cheeses around the world through the breeders' cooperative. Out in the fields the monument that catches the eye is of quite another scale and quite another age, the dolmen of Sa Coveccada. And at Su Sassu, on the racing circuit opened in 2003, the motorcycles of the supermoto world championship have passed too.
