Thiesi

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,005 · Postal code: 07047

Thiesi has 3,005 inhabitants in the Meilogu, in north-western Sardinia. That h in the name is recent: until the nineteen-twenties the village was written Tiesi, and the letter only settled into use then, although it already appears twice, as "Thiessi", in a deed of enfeoffment of 1436. The real name is older than either form: scholars trace it back to a pre-Greek world, comparing it with the medieval form Tigesi.

The date remembered in Thiesi is 6 October 1800, sa die de s'atacu. Those were the years of Giovanni Maria Angioy's antifeudal movement: in 1795 Thiesi, Bessude and Cheremule had signed a pact against the feudal regime, and the following year another pact, again here, brought thirty-two villages together. When the feudal lord demanded his dues, the village refused, and the government secretly organised a punitive expedition, promising an amnesty to any bandits who took part. At dawn fifteen hundred men gathered, most of them bandits; Thiesi had eight hundred men to defend it. It ended with fourteen dead, eighteen houses burned and twenty-three arrests; some of those captured were hanged in February 1801.
