Martis

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 553 · Postal code: 07030

The coat of arms, granted in 2005, is made of four things that are on the walls of the village: a two-tailed mermaid carved on a limestone lintel, a pine cone decorating a monogram of Christ above the door of an old house, the palm of Saint Pantaleon on reliefs reset into doorways, and a Templar cross cut into a block of trachyte built into a buttress of the church of San Pantaleo, which is of the fourteenth century.

The pine cone counts twice, because in the territory lies the petrified forest of Carrucana, with plants turned to stone in the Miocene. At the station the scheduled train ran until 1997: now, on the Sassari to Tempio and Palau line, only the Trenino Verde goes by, which exists for looking out of the window.
