Sedini

In the main street of Sedini there is a domus de janas, a set of tombs cut into the rock in the Neolithic, and it is not a small one. The village did not leave it standing there as a monument: between the end of the eighteen hundreds and the early nineteen hundreds it used it as the prison, then it became an ordinary dwelling house, and today it holds the ethnographic museum. There is a good deal of hollowed rock here: the fossa di la Lòriga, on the hill of lu Padru, is a cave with chambers some ten metres high, full of stalactites and stalagmites, and in the district there open the grotto of Conchi and the Pilchina di li Caadaggi. The nuraghe Lu Paddru, built of limestone blocks, keeps its inner chamber intact in the ogive, and around the tower the huts of the village can still be seen. In the valley of the rio Silanis stands the church of San Nicola di Silanis, which was already there before 1122.

In the Middle Ages Sedini belonged to the giudicato of Torres, in the curatoria of Anglona; when the giudicato fell, in 1259, it passed to the Doria, then to the Malaspina, then around 1450 to the Aragonese; in the seventeen hundreds it was incorporated into the principality of Anglona, under the Pimentel and then the Tellez-Giron d'Alcantara, from whom it was redeemed in 1839. In the Spelunca district there remain the traces of a village abandoned, probably during the plague of 1656. The arms, granted in 2002, say what the village thinks of itself: the cross is that of Saint Andrew, the patron; the sheaf of ears is there because the territory of Sedini was held to be the most productive in the Anglona; the horse stands for the old equestrian traditions and for the breeding of horses, which is still carried on. And Santa Maria Coghinas, which today is a comune of its own, was until 1960 a part of Sedini.
