Nulvi

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,851 · Postal code: 07032

Nulvi has 2,851 inhabitants in the Anglona, and in its territory there are 78 nuraghi: a figure that on its own says how densely this hill country was settled in the nuragic age. The most important monument is the sacred well of Irru, built in limestone and made of three bodies: the tholos chamber with its vestibule and two successive atria, sixteen metres by seven and a half in all. Not far off stands the complex nuraghe that carries the same name.

Nulvi was for centuries the main town of the Anglona, and the list of what it had says it better than any adjective: the prison, the magistrate's court, the command of the carabinieri lieutenancy, the conscription board for the whole north of Sardinia and the agricultural high school, the first founded on the island. It has lost them all, one after another, and with them its role as the chief town of the area. The railway has come to a similar end: the station on the Sassari-Tempio-Palau line carried passengers until 2015, and today only the tourists' Trenino Verde stops there.
