Nughedu San Nicolò

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 874 · Postal code: 07010

Nughedu means walnut grove: until the early twentieth century walnut trees lined the vegetable gardens along the rio Lichitu, in the little valley just outside the village. On the coat of arms there is a red tower on a silver field, and out of the tower grows a walnut tree. The saint in the name was added later: in Sardinia there are two Nughedu, and each carries its own, San Nicolò and Santa Vittoria.

The village belonged to the giudicato of Torres, then to the Genoese Doria and the Tuscan Malaspina, then to the Aragonese, who in 1421 gave it in fief to the Centelles; in the eighteenth century it ended up in the duchy of Monte Acuto and was redeemed from the Tellez Giron in 1839, when feudalism was abolished. From older times remain the domus de janas of S'Istria and the traces of a settlement at Su Soldanu.
