Pattada

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,253 · Postal code: 07016

Pattada has 3,253 inhabitants in the Monteacuto, at 828 metres, and it is the highest village in the Sassari area. The name, according to the linguist Max Leopold Wagner, simply means plateau; but in the village another story was told, that it came from patto, a pact. Down in the valley there were more than seven villages; after raids and floods the heads of them met and decided to join together and refound themselves all in one more defensible place. The only one that refused was Bantine, which indeed is still where it was, a hamlet of Pattada but a settlement of its own.

Here the folding knives that carry the village's name are made by hand, the resolzas pattadesas, and they are the thing Pattada is known for across the whole of Sardinia. Just outside the built-up area are the ruins of the castle of Olomene, where an important hoard of medieval coins was found. And the woods of Monte Lerno, which depopulation had left empty, are today filling up again by themselves: the mouflon and the Sardinian deer are back, and above them fly the golden eagle, the kite and the goshawk.
