Ittireddu

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 580 · Postal code: 07010

Sardinia is the Italian region that shakes least, and the strongest earthquake ever recorded on its mainland had its epicentre here: the Logudoro quake of 1870, put at between the fifth and the sixth degree of the Mercalli scale. The village sits on a hill called monte Ruiu, red mountain, among reliefs of volcanic origin.

The church of Santa Croce is Byzantine, and in the countryside there remain a Roman bridge that people here call ponte 'etzu, the old bridge, and some cisterns cut into the rock at Olensas — perhaps used for pressing olives. On monte Zuighe, around the year one thousand, there were a village and a castle which had already vanished by the time the Aragonese arrived. The civic museum holds together the archaeology and the peasants' tools.
