Castelsardo

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 5,737 · Postal code: 07031

The Genoese Doria founded it in the twelfth century on a headland sheer above the gulf of Asinara, and Castelsardo keeps its stronghold layout: castle on top — now the museum of Mediterranean weaving, devoted to the famous dwarf-palm baskets — bastions, and a cathedral whose majolica-domed bell tower hangs over the sea.

On holy Monday, the Lunissanti fills the night with confraternity chants among Sardinia's oldest. On the road to Sedini, the Elephant Rock — a boulder shaped by wind, with prehistoric rock tombs dug inside — is the most photographed natural monument of the island's north.
