Since the 13th century, on 22 July, Ballao has celebrated the patroness of the village, Saint Mary Magdalene (santa Maria Maddalena), in a church dedicated to her; the celebrations usually last 3 or 4 days.
Other occasions include that of Santa Maria di Cleofe, called «Santa Maria Nuraxi» by the people of Ballao, on Easter Monday at a country church on the border with Silius, with celebrations and a procession accompanied by typical Sardinian songs and dances. On 2 November, for «Is Aimedasa», children, representing the souls of the dead, go from house to house asking for sweets and fruit.
