Las Plassas

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 257 · Postal code: 09020

Above Las Plassas rises a conical hill that in Sardinian is called «mramidda», the breast, and the whole surrounding region, the Marmilla, took its name from that shape. On the summit stand the ruins of the castle, built before the twelfth century as a border stronghold of the kingdom of Arborea and in use until the end of the fifteenth: three sides of a northern tower and a southern tower remain, and the perimeter, seen from above, recalled a ship with a prow and a quarterdeck.

Long before that, in Roman times, the inhabitants had raised a temple to Jupiter here: an inscription now displayed in the village museum, devoted to the kingdom of Arborea, says so. In 1541 the barony was bought by Açor Zapata under a diploma of Charles V signed at Regensburg, and that family took the village's name as a noble title, holding the fief until the redemption of 1839 and remaining in Sardinia until the end of the twentieth century. Out in the countryside, the church of Santa Maria keeps a nuragic well inside it.
