Turri

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 442 · Postal code: 09020

Turri is one of the saffron villages: here the red gold is grown in earnest, and on the second Sunday of November they hold a festival for it. The other thing that grows well is the olive: in the district called molinu, at the entrance to the village, stands the largest concentration of centuries-old olive trees in all Sardinia, about two hundred plants in a little more than two hectares.

One square in the village is still called Pratza de Presoni, the square of the prison, because a Spanish prison really was there: the parish death registers of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries say so. In an old Campidanese house of the Accalai family the municipality has made a house museum, with the tools, the bedrooms and the kitchens of how life was lived. The village was a fief of the Carroz, counts of Quirra, then of the Centelles when Quirra became a marquisate in 1603, and finally of the Osorio de la Cueva, from whom it bought itself out in 1839.
