Pauli Arbarei

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 651 · Postal code: 09020

The name comes from a marsh, pauli, that lay between two villages: this one and Pauli Sitzamus. Sitzamus emptied out in 1728, and its ruins were still marked on the cadastral maps of the eighteen hundreds; the marsh was drained by two noblemen, Francesco Maria and Emanuele Paderi, who had bought it from the demesne.

Of the village churches the end of each one is known: San Sebastiano became the grain store, Sant'Elena ended up inside a private house, of Santa Maria there remain the ruins and it is thought to have been a monastery chapel. Outside, from the number of burials, it is reckoned that up to three hundred people lived in the nuraghe Bruncu Mannu.
