Su Nuraxi is the reason the Nuragic civilisation has a name in the world: the village with its central tower from the sixteenth century BC, excavated by Giovanni Lilliu, has been UNESCO-listed since 1997, and walking among its circular huts and basalt bastions is the most direct way to touch a thousand years of Sardinia before written history.
Barumini, the town, adds Casa Zapata — the baronial palace built over another nuraghe, visible beneath glass floors — and the Lilliu centre for understanding before you excavate with your eyes. The Marmilla around is a sea of wheat hills.
