Nurri

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,233 · Postal code: 09059

Nurri lies in the Sarcidano district, and its countryside is scattered with domus de janas and nuraghi: the area was inhabited long before anyone put it on a map. Beside the village stood Biora, a Roman settlement founded with a precise task, to contain the raids of the inland tribes. It was, in effect, a frontier garrison, and the frontier ran right through here.

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the giudicato of Cagliari and to the curatoria of Siurgus, then to the judges of Arborea, then to Pisa by testament; with the Aragonese conquest it became a fief of the Carroz family and in 1604 it was absorbed into the duchy of Mandas, bought out only in 1839 when the feudal system ended. Mandas returns a second time, unexpectedly: the railway crossing the territory is the Mandas-Arbatax line, and since 1997 only tourist trains run on it, stopping north of the village.
