Escolca

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 624 · Postal code: 09052

Once a year the people of Escolca go back to San Simone, a village in their own territory where nobody lives any more, and hold its feast there: it happens on the weekend after Pentecost. The village lies at the foot of the giara of Serri and lives on grain and above all on oil; the local crafts are the old looms and the basket weavers.

From 1952 to 1974 the Cadoni family kept open the Cinema Vittoria, the first and only one in the village. Escolca has also been an administrative ball: it was in the province of Nuoro, in 2001 it was to pass to the Medio Campidano, in 2003 it ended up in Cagliari and with the reform of 2016 it landed in the Sud Sardegna. The fief, before that, had belonged to the Carroz and then to the dukes of Mandas, until the redemption of 1839.
