The town changed its name three times, and each time to tell itself apart. First it was Alessandria della Pietra, from Alessandro Presti, who owned the fief, and from the nearby castle of Pietra d'Amico. In 1713, under Vittorio Amedeo II, it became Alessandria di Sicilia, because there were too many Alessandrias in Italy.
Today's name dates from 10 May 1863 and comes from the Madonna della Rocca, the patron saint. The town was born in 1570, when the fief of Presti Alessandro was raised to a comune: its first lord was Carlo Barresi, invested two years earlier with the barony of Pietra d'Amico. The coat of arms carries the blazons of the Barresi and the Di Napoli. There are 3,118 residents.
