San Biagio Platani celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February, in the church dedicated to him.
At Easter the main street is covered with arches: woven cane, laurel, pulses, cereals and bread, mounted to roof the road. The tradition goes back to the seventeenth century, and in those days the town fills with people who come to see it.
The town was born in 1635, when Giovanni Battista Gerardi obtained licence to settle the fief: back then eighty inhabitants were enough to give the lord a seat in parliament. The houses grew in a grid around the mother church and the ducal palace, on the flank of a hill running down to the river Platani — and Platani was added to the name in 1864, to avoid confusion with the other San Biagios. There are 3,501 residents.
