Albanian settlers of the Arbëreshë community founded Sant'Angelo Muxaro, giving the town its traditional Albanian name, Shënt'Ëngjëlli. This historical group established the original settlement in the Sicilian countryside north of Agrigento.
With a population of 1,471, the municipality is located 20 kilometres north of Agrigento and 70 kilometres south of Palermo. Its boundary borders nine neighboring territories, including Casteltermini, Raffadali, and Santa Elisabetta.
