In the tombs cut into this hill four bowls of gold and silver from the seventh century BC were found. Only one survives: the phiale with six striding bulls, now in the British Museum, and it has become the town's emblem.
The hill opposite, Monte Castello, is for many scholars Camico, the capital of the Sicanian king Kokalos: the place where Minos, come to Sicily in search of Daedalus, is said to have died — Sophocles wrote a tragedy about it, now lost. The town stands at 335 metres above the Platani, and at the start of the sixteenth century it took in Albanian refugees, who kept the Greek rite here for a couple of centuries. There are 1,471 residents.
