Over 60 percent of the Italian immigrants who settled in Tampa, Florida, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries originated from Santo Stefano Quisquina. This transatlantic heritage is central to the history of this Agrigento municipality, home today to 4,897 residents.
Standing 730 meters above sea level, the town adopted its present name on May 10, 1863, dropping its earlier titles of Santo Stefano di Melia and Santo Stefano di Bivona. It lies 35 kilometers north of Agrigento and 60 kilometers south of Palermo.
