When Charles V created the first duchy in the Kingdom of Sicily here in 1554, Bivona was already a major feudal stronghold. Ignatius of Loyola had personally endorsed its Jesuit college, adding to a sacred heritage that includes one of the earliest documented venerations of Saint Rosalia alongside remnants of a medieval synagogue.
Set in the Sicani Mountains, the town of 3,882 inhabitants keeps its agricultural and craft traditions alive. It is famous for the Bivona Peach, granted PGI status in 2014, and for a distinctive handmade wooden chair. Walking through the medieval core reveals architectural layers dating back to Islamic and Norman times.
