On 8 August Realmonte celebrates Saint Dominic, its patron, in the Agrigento municipality of the Scala dei Turchi.
The Scala dei Turchi is a spur of white marl that steps down to the sea, and the name comes from a legend: in the sixteenth century Ottoman corsairs are said to have landed there. Not far off, underground, miners have carved a cathedral out of the rock salt.
The town, on the other hand, was born of a contract: on 14 August 1681 the Monreale, dukes of Castrofilippo, bought these lands, obtained the licence to settle them and brought in 250 people from Castrofilippo, giving the place their own family name. The coast changes colour as you go west, from white to blue-grey to red. There are 4,487 residents.
