The name is double, like the two reasons behind it: Joppolo comes from the founder's wife, Rosalia Ioppolo, and Giancaxio from the fief where the town was built. It was raised in 1696 by baron Gabriele Colonna of Cesarò.
It became a comune when feudalism ended, but then lost the status twice: in 1827 it was downgraded to a hamlet of Aragona, in 1892 it ended up inside Raffadali, and only in 1926 did it get its town hall back. Above the houses stands the dukes' castle, seventeenth-century, which in 1894 the architect Francesco Paolo Palazzotto dressed with battlements and corbels, in the medieval manner. There are 1,210 residents.
