Butera celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August: his statue is kept in the town's sanctuary, while the Arab-Norman castle overlooking the town, once held by the Alagona family and later by the Catalan prince Ugo di Santapau, is said by popular tradition to be linked to Falconara castle by underground tunnels.

The patron saint of Butera is Saint Roch, celebrated on 16 August, with the sanctuary dedicated to him on Via Armando Diaz.

The hill of Butera has drawn human settlement since prehistory: traces of Sican settlements dating from the Middle Bronze Age, between 1400 and 1000 BC, have emerged on the highest part of the rocky ridge, while lower down a multi-layered necropolis served as the burial ground of the small prehistoric community between the 8th and 5th centuries BC. The castle of Butera, also known as the Arab-Norman castle, stands on a rise at about 402 metres above sea level, from which it strategically dominated the Salso river valley and the inland communication routes of central-southern Sicily. The Alagona family held the county until 1392, when, being hostile to King Martin, they were defeated and the land was confiscated: together with the Falconara tower it was granted to the Catalan prince Ugo di Santapau, by a charter issued on 18 October at Castrogiovanni for services rendered to the Aragonese king in the war against the rebels. According to popular tradition, the castle of Butera is said to be linked by underground tunnels precisely to the castle of Falconara, still feeding local legends tied to the territory's medieval defensive network today.
