Gela, on the gulf that carries its name, has a few thousand more residents than Caltanissetta itself, and the province stays split between inland hills and a short strip of coast. There are only 22 municipalities, most of them large, in a landscape crossed by the Salso, which rises near Palermo and reaches the sea at the edge of the Gulf of Gela.
Most of what there is to see sits in and around Caltanissetta: the cathedral, the Norman abbey of Santo Spirito, the ruined Pietrarossa castle on its rock, and two near-empty archaeological sites, Sabucina and Gibil Gabib, where Sicilian natives and Greek settlers met. Add Mussomeli's castle on its limestone spur and Gela, one of the oldest Greek colonies on the island and now a hard, interesting city.
