Mazzarino stands on a plateau at 553 metres, with the plain of Gela spread out below: it is the tenth largest comune in Sicily, almost three hundred square kilometres, and it even has two detached pieces, the former fiefs of Brigadieci and Gallitano.
The town took shape in the second half of the thirteenth century; in 1507 its lords were given the title of counts of Mazzarino. Around it there is durum wheat — more than six thousand hectares — and seven thousand hectares of woodland, on ground that holds sulphur, rock salt and potash beneath. There are 12,333 residents.

Mazzarino celebrates Mary Most Holy of the Mazzaro on the third Sunday of September; the basilica-sanctuary dedicated to her was designed in 1739 by the Syracusan architect Carmelo Natale Bonajuto, at the wish of the Capuchin friar Ludovico Napoli da Mazzarino.
