Legend says the marquis Trigona sold wheat to a friar from Naso, who left a ring as a pledge and never came back to pay. He went looking for him and recognised him in a painting, in a convent: it was Saint Conus, dead five hundred years earlier. He gave the saint's name to the town he founded.
The town dates from 1785: Ottavio Trigona Bellotti had a church and sixty houses built at his own expense, and called people from all over Sicily with the promise of a house and a piece of land — a fair few who had scores open with the courts answered too. San Cono stands at 525 metres in the Erei, and today lives on prickly pears. There are 2,790 residents.

San Cono celebrates its patron saint on the second and third Sunday of May: the procession continues throughout the night, collecting offerings from the faithful to the cry of «Viva Diu e Santu Conu», interrupted only for prayers and songs and, at midnight, for fireworks.
Saffron rice, ragù with peas and caciocavallo inside a golden cone-shaped crust: in Catania it is masculine and pointed, and the quarrel with Palermo over the name is serious.
