The town was called Milocca, and it was born in 1923 out of pieces of Campofranco and Sutera. In August 1933 it was renamed Littoria Nissena; a few months later it changed again, and since 25 January 1934 it has been Milena, after the queen of Montenegro, mother of queen Elena.
Under the old name, though, the town ended up in the textbooks: the American anthropologist Charlotte Gower Chapman lived here and wrote Milocca, a Sicilian Village, one of the first fieldwork studies of a peasant community. It stands at 423 metres among the hills east of the Platani, and was made of scattered villages that were only drawn together after the war. There are 3,178 residents.
