On 10 February 1573 Philip II gave baron del Campo licence to build a hamlet, and he called it Campofranco: «campo» from his own name, «franco» from the franchises — ten years without taxes and free land for anyone who came to settle here.
It worked: the first arrivals came from Sutera, and in the census of 1583 there were already 117 families, 462 souls. The town sits at 350 metres above the Platani, the westernmost in the province of Caltanissetta. In its territory lies the Monte Conca reserve, 245 hectares of gypsum hollowed by water: a stream vanishes into a swallow hole and comes back out further on at a resurgence. There are 3,218 residents.
