Sutera

Province: Caltanissetta · Region: Sicily · Population: 1,436 · Postal code: 93010

Holding a unique record as the only municipality in Sicily awarded the Touring Club Italiano's Orange Flag, Sutera has a population of 1,436. Located 70 kilometres southeast of Palermo, this village takes its name from the Greek word Soter, meaning salvation, and sits under the shadow of the massive monolith known as the Mountain of San Paolino.

Atop the peak, a sanctuary holds the remains of patron saints Paolino and Onofrio, attracting townsfolk in pilgrimage during the annual feast of St. Onofrio. Recognized among I Borghi più belli d'Italia, Sutera is twinned with Broxbourne in England and has revitalized its local economy and school through an initiative integrating asylum seekers.
