The church of San Nicolò is in the centre of Misterbianco, with a main entrance and a side one on via San Nicolò. It was built after the Etna lava flow of 1669 that overran the old town, and was the first to rise on the site of the new settlement: its design followed an existing church that had been razed to the ground along with the rest of the old centre.
What to see
At first it was to be dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, but after a collapse around the middle of the eighteenth century the design changed, and so did the dedication: first to Saint Dominic, then, definitively, to the Madonna of the Rosary and Saint Nicholas together.
Among the works, some datable to the mid-seventeenth century, is a painting of Saint Peter with Saint Lawrence and Saint Placidus; at the end of the church, in the centre, stands an altarpiece of the Madonna of the Rosary.
Visiting
After the earthquake of 21 April 2023, which brought down plaster and pieces of stucco from cornices and mouldings, the church stayed closed and reopened on 30 September 2025, the day it was also dedicated. Opening hours should be checked with the parish.
Our editors' tip
The nearby church of the Madonna delle Grazie, built almost at the same time, houses the town's museum of sacred art in its crypt.
