One night in 1669, Etna's lava swallowed Misterbianco: of the old town remains the Campanarazzu, the truncated bell tower re-emerging from the lava field, now an archaeological site of the most devastating eruption in Etna's history. The town was reborn slightly downhill, and has lived with the volcano ever since, like every centre of the Catania belt.
Today Misterbianco is the metropolitan area's commercial gateway — its trade-fair and retail hubs serve half of eastern Sicily — with a centre gathered around the mother church. Etna looms, Catania adjoins: a headquarters position.
