Camporotondo Etneo celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot on 17 January, in the church dedicated to him.
In March 1669 the lava of Etna took the town: only the quarter of Sant'Antonio was spared. Whoever could leave left, and of the 1,600 inhabitants of 1655, by 1714 — after the 1693 earthquake as well — 181 were left.
The name comes from the round shape of the first settlement, one of the vineyard hamlets around Catania. In 1649 Antonio Reitano bought it for 2,800 onze, and in 1654 Diego Reitano was made marquis of it: from then on it governed itself, free of feudal ties, with a «Leconte» in place of a mayor. All around are small eruptive cones and the escarpments they call timpe here. There are 4,476 residents.
