Long before attracting modern travellers, Castelmola functioned as the ancient Greek acropolis for neighbouring Taormina. Set roughly 40 kilometres southwest of Messina, this village of 1,073 residents is officially recognized among I Borghi più belli d'Italia.
Every year on 1 May, the main square fills with sound for Castelrock, a Labour Day festival featuring live performances by local musicians. The municipality covers 16.4 square kilometres, bordering Letojanni, Gaggi, and Mongiuffi Melia about 170 kilometres east of Palermo.
