Famed locally as one of the "quattru paisi di li funci"—the four mushroom towns of the Nebrodi region—Galati Mamertino sits 810 meters above sea level. The surrounding slopes, covered in beech and oak forests, produce wild mushrooms alongside long-standing hazelnut and olive groves.
With a population of 2,794, the settlement retains a distinct medieval plan shaped like an eagle flying north. Daily life centers on Piazza San Giacomo and the neighboring main church, roughly 70 kilometers west of Messina.
