The great church, the one of the Salvator Mundi, was rebuilt by the Normans over a Byzantine building, and in 1515 they widened it again. But the oldest thing in the town is a sanctuary cut into the rock, dedicated to the Madonna della Pietà, which goes back to the ninth century.
The town lies in the Nebrodi, between Naso and Tortorici, and keeps more than you would expect: the fifteenth-century Bishop's palace, that of the Grasso barons, the Podestà's palace, the ruins of the Torre del Capitano. The great feast is that of San Calogero, in the seventeenth-century sanctuary that bears his name. There are 1,378 residents.
