The town was made by shepherds: they came down from Mistretta, which stands at a thousand metres, to winter lower down with their flocks, and in the end they stayed. The old part, at the bottom, is still the one of narrow lanes around the church of the Carmine.
In 1638 Francesco Romano Colonna bought Reitano from the court of Philip IV, drawn by the good land and the climate, and his descendants held it as dukes until 1839. Down by the sea, in the Villa Margi hamlet, stands the «Finestra sul mare» by Tano Festa, one of the sculptures of the Fiumara d'Arte: a great white frame that frames the Tyrrhenian. There are 829 residents.

On 2 June Reitano, a municipality of 829 inhabitants in the province of Messina, celebrates its patron Saint Erasmus; in the hamlet of Villa Margi stands the sculpture «Finestra sul mare» by Tano Festa.
