In the year 965, Rometta secured its place in history as the final Sicilian stronghold to fall to the Kalbids' Muslim army. Before that decisive siege, the settlement served as the very last bastion of the Eastern Roman Empire on the island.
Currently home to around 6,500 residents, the municipality is situated a short 12-kilometer drive west of Messina. The fierce Byzantine defenses are long gone, but the same strategic elevation that frustrated tenth-century invaders continues to define the town's geography today.
