During the early Middle Ages, local Orthodox monks constructed a fortress to repel Arab attacks across eastern Sicily. The surviving castle ruins later passed to Norman, Hohenstaufen, and Anjou rulers who expanded the stronghold.
Located 15 kilometres west of Messina and 180 kilometres from Palermo, Monforte San Giorgio has a population of 2,880. The hill-top fortification remains the main historical reference point for those exploring this sector of the province.
