Approaching the Niceto Valley twenty kilometres west of Messina, travellers reach the hillside settlement of San Pier Niceto. Originally called San Pietro di Monforte when it was a village attached to neighbouring Monforte San Giorgio, the municipality adopted its current name in 1873, adding Niceto from the Greek word nike, meaning victory.
The municipality has 2,911 residents and covers 36 square kilometres of territory. Its land extends from the hills down toward the coast, including the hamlets of San Pier Marina, Serro, Zifronte, and Pirrera.
