Feast of the Madonna Addolorata
📅 Every year, on 15 September
On 15 September Torrenova celebrates the Madonna Addolorata; the village also preserves old coastal watchtowers, such as Torre Gatto and Torre Marco.
There were three towers, put up from the fifteenth century against pirates and part of the coastal watch system designed by the Florentine Camillo Camilliani. The most recent was called Torre Nuova, the new tower, and from it the town took its name. Of Torre Cuffari a ruin is left; Torre Marco collapsed in January 2019.
Torrenova has been a comune only since 9 December 1984: before that it was a frazione of San Marco d'Alunzio. Outside the built-up area stands the Byzantine church of San Pietro in Deca, a Greek-Basilian monastery recorded from the twelfth century: what remains is a round dome, later given an octagonal outer casing that has no equal in Sicily. There are 4,240 residents.
