Located 120 kilometres east of Palermo and 80 kilometres west of Messina, San Marco d'Alunzio is home to 2,083 residents. Known in Sicilian as Sammarcu, the settlement dates back to antiquity, when it was recorded in Ancient Greek as Alontion and later under the Latin name Aluntium.
Situated near Sicily's northern coast within the Parco dei Nebrodi, it holds membership in the association of I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The municipal territory borders six neighboring areas, including Frazzanò, Longi, Capri Leone, and Militello Rosmarino.
