In the waters off Venetico Marina, in 36 BC, the battle of Naulochus was fought: the fleet of Sextus Pompey was destroyed by Octavian's ships, commanded by Agrippa.
The town, on the other hand, was born out of bureaucratic necessity. In 1447 Alfonso of Aragon sold the fief to Corrado Spadafora, who wanted the title of baron and civil jurisdiction; but jurisdiction needs subjects, and at Venetico there were not enough. The first inhabitants were therefore brought in from outside, and towards the middle of the fifteenth century the castle arrived too. There are 3,855 residents.
