Torregrotta

Province: Messina · Region: Sicily · Population: 7,426 · Postal code: 98040

Approaching Torregrotta between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lower Peloritani hills, visitors enter the historic birthplace of the sbergia, a unique local fruit. Set in the Niceto valley, this town of 7,426 residents has evolved significantly, leaving behind its agricultural roots and a once-thriving clay extraction industry that faded in the 2000s.

Originally a medieval hamlet belonging to the Santa Maria della Scala fiefdom, the settlement was abandoned before being rebuilt in 1526. It finally gained independence from neighboring Roccavaldina in 1923. Today, the 16th-century core is surrounded by newer developments, reflecting an economy now driven by small construction businesses rather than traditional farming.
